“Synergies and Trade-offs of the sustainable transition: national level practices” is the 2° SPES Policy Dialogue organized in cooperation with TARKI Social Research Institute and the Hungarian National Council for Sustainable Development. The Policy Dialogue focuses on the key role played by Environment and Sustainable Development Advisory Councils in several European countries for integrated policy-making. It aims to trigger an exchange on the translation of cutting-edge evidence on sustainability transition into integrated, whole-of-society policymaking at national level.

Current societal challenges, such as accelerating climate and biodiversity crises, rising cost of living and growing multidimensional inequalities, geopolitical conflicts and political polarisation, require balancing economic objectives with the goals of achieving sustainable human development and wellbeing for all.
To do so, it is crucial to better address various synergies and trade-offs among the multiple dimensions of the sustainability transition: this involves combining environmental concerns and awareness of planetary limits to growth with both inclusiveness and equality of opportunities, and long-term societal prosperity.

However, despite meaningful efforts by various European, national and local actors, social, environmental and economic policies are still often made in silos rather than with an inter-institutional and whole-of-society approach. Implementing such an approach requires bridging the gap between scientific and academic evidence as well as practical experiences on the ground on the one hand and integrated policy-making processes on the other.
This can support developing policy interventions that consistently leverage synergies (and minimise trade-offs/tensions) through mutually reinforcing policy mixes.
